Global market leader in cruise ship scanning:
How Liquid Ambient captures entire fleets as
3D digital twins
While other agencies have often only performed selective scans, Liquid Ambient is the only global provider to have captured the latest megaliners as complete, contiguous 3D digital twins—including exterior decks and crew areas.
A cruise ship is not a hotel. It vibrates, sways, glistens—and it never sleeps. This is precisely what makes the complete digital capture of these floating cities one of the most technically demanding tasks in the world of 3D visualization and virtual tour production. Liquid Ambient, based in Stuttgart, specializes in exactly this—and is now the world’s leading provider of Matterport scanning on cruise ships and in the hospitality industry.
What at first glance appears to be a classic 360-degree tour is in reality the result of proprietary workflows, highly specialized post-production, and years of operational experience aboard ships in service—both in shipyards and during turnaround operations.

Featured Projects
Liquid Ambient creates virtual tours for cruise ships and international hotel chains at the very highest level. Key projects in the cruise sector:
AIDA Cruises · Helios-, Hyperion- & Sphinx-Klasse · Gesamte Flotte
AIDAnova & die AIDA-Fleet
A milestone in transparency and HR marketing for cruise lines: For the first time, Liquid Ambient has scanned the normally strictly off-limits crew areas—cabins, mess halls, and common areas—across the entire fleet and made them accessible as a seamless 3D tour for recruiting purposes. The project covered ships from the Helios class (AIDAnova, AIDAcosma), the Hyperion class (AIDAprima, AIDAperla), and the Sphinx class.
Mein Schiff Relax & Mein Schiff Flow
TUI Cruises’ brand-new flagship has been fully digitized—highly complex, state-of-the-art ship structures seamlessly translated into a virtual 360-degree tour. The launch of the newly commissioned Mein Schiff Flow will follow shortly. The remaining ships in the TUI fleet are already in the planning stages.
“The digital twin of a cruise ship is not the result of better hardware—but rather the result of proprietary workflows.”
The 4 Technical Challenges Onboard
What sets a cruise ship scan apart from any other Matterport project are four fundamental technical challenges that would overwhelm any standard agency—and for which Liquid Ambient has developed proprietary solutions.
Micro-movement & Vibration of the Ship
Matterport Pro3 LiDAR scanners require absolute immobility for error-free stitching. This is impossible on a ship: constant motion, engine vibrations, and air conditioning systems distort scan data. Liquid Ambient has developed its own scanning patterns and algorithms that eliminate this very problem—a proprietary workflow that no other Matterport agency in Germany or worldwide has mastered to the same extent.
The Mirror & Glass Nightmare
Cruise ships make extensive use of mirrors, chrome, and polished steel. Infrared and laser signals are reflected—the scanner interprets a mirror as an actual room. Without expert knowledge, this results in ghost images and gaps in the digital twin. Liquid Ambient’s specialized 3D artists remove these artifacts to a standard unmatched in the industry.
The logistical window – turnaround day & night shifts
With 3,000 to 6,000 passengers on board, scanning while the ship is in operation is virtually impossible. The team often has only the few hours during passenger turnover in port (turnaround day) or the late hours of the night. Liquid Ambient coordinates scanning teams and crew access with military precision.
Outdoor decks & intense sunlight
Pool decks, jogging paths, and sun decks are vast and exposed to direct sunlight. Older Matterport technology (Pro2) fails completely in outdoor settings. Liquid Ambient relies exclusively on the Matterport Pro3 with LiDAR and has developed its own workflows to seamlessly connect large outdoor areas with indoor spaces.
Our Unique Expertise
Global market leadership isn’t achieved through superior hardware alone—but through proprietary workflows, highly specialized post-processing, and operational experience. As a Matterport agency based in Stuttgart with an international track record, we cover the entire spectrum of the Matterport ecosystem.
Post-Production-Expertise
Highly specialized 3D artists refine scan data to a level that other providers cannot match—a perfect digital twin, no compromises.
Matterport & High-End-CGI
Seamless integration of real scans with computer-generated visualizations—ideal for construction or renovation projects (dry dock).
Customized Interfaces
Custom user interfaces with interactive Mattertags – make reservations and submit service requests directly from the 360-degree tour.
Crew & Operations-Expertise
Shipyard operations, ongoing ship operations, sensitive crew areas – Liquid Ambient operates on board in compliance with data protection regulations (GDPR) and with the utmost discretion.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Matterport tours on cruise ships, 3D digital twins for cruise lines, and our partnership with LIQUID AMBIENT:
What is a digital twin of a cruise ship?
A digital twin of a cruise ship is a complete, true-to-scale 3D replica of the entire vessel—from the cabins to the outdoor decks to the crew areas. Created using the Matterport Pro3 scanner and LiDAR technology, it enables a realistic, navigable online tour. Passengers, prospective crew members, and travel agencies can explore the ship virtually—this enhances the customer journey and has been proven to increase booking rates and conversion.
Which cruise ships has LIQUID AMBIENT already digitized?
For example, Liquid Ambient has created complete 3D digital twins of the entire AIDA fleet—including the AIDAnova and AIDAcosma (Helios class), the AIDAprima and AIDAperla (Hyperion class), and several ships of the Sphinx class. For TUI Cruises, the Mein Schiff Relax has been digitized; the Mein Schiff Flow and other ships in the TUI fleet are already in the process of being digitized.
Why is Matterport scanning so difficult on ships?
How long does it take to scan an entire cruise ship?
How much does a Matterport scan of a cruise ship cost?
Can LIQUID AMBIENT also scan hotels and other hospitality properties?
Is a scan possible during a shipyard visit (dry dock)?
